Attolia

Despite the fact that my calendar says I've posted at least once every day this month, I don't feel like I've been very communicative lately. I guess I'm holding onto a lot of things; not secrets precisely, because they don't involve anyone else, but my own impressions.

Upon Gina's recommendation, I picked up the Attolia series by Megan Whelan Turner. I really enjoyed The Theif even as I felt I would have liked it more had I been 11. It has some nice origin myths, an interesting fantasy country clearly modelled on ancient Greece, and a surprise ending that was more satisfying than I thought it might be.

Currently I'm in the middle of the second book The Queen of Attolia and I'm not sure I like it. There's a lot more political intrigue, but not the kind I like involving romance, fans, and poisonings. It's still clever, but much sadder, and borderlining on sadism. There is a major plot twist that happens at the very beginning of the book and sets the tone for the rest of the novel. Nevertheless, I think I'll finish the book, and probably the series.

Has anyone else read these books?
You Are Rogue

You're reluctantly special. In fact, you long to be normal.
You consider your powers to be a curse, and something you can't control.

Powers: absorbing other people's memories and abilities, weakening and killing people with your touch

Yep, that about sums up my recent outlook on life, and on being "gifted" generally. It was easier when I was younger, surrounded by other gifted people, and could adhere to the fascist ideology that 'stupid' people were inferior.
