TAMAR: A NOVEL OF ESPIONAGE, PASSION, AND BETRAYAL by Mal Peet
A fantastic, morally complex, novel about spies who are dropped into Nazi occupied The Netherlands during the "Hunger Winter" of 1944. This book is less about the conflict with the Nazis, then it is about infighting between differing resistance factions. The only nod to the intended YA audience is a secondary narrative involving the granddaughter of one of the spies. This is the less interesting part of the book, serving more as a device to show the impact of the war across generations than it is an integral aspect of the primary narrative. Nevertheless its a fantastic read, and I heartily recommend the book to adults interested in the subject matter.

THE WHITE DARKNESS by Geraldine McCaughrean
Finally, The White Darkness by Geraldine McCaughrean is a very bizarre novel about a girl obsessed with Capt. Lawrence "Titus" Oates of the doomed Antarctic Scott expedition. Symone ends up travelling to Antarctica with her Uncle Victor who has a dangerous obsession of his own. This is one of those books that is so strange that I couldn't figure out how someone had thought up the idea to write it in the first place. [Please note, the website edited my review and changed the word "polar" to "Arctic" incorrectly. Polar refers to both poles. Arctic refers to the north pole.]
