Sleeping pills...

In other words, chemically induced amnesia.
It's like that line from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind where the technicians promise to erase all the negative memories of failed romances from one's mind: "Technically, it's brain damage."
Which would explain why, on those few occasions I've taken sleeping pills, I wake feeling like I've been knocked out, but not particularly rested.
But to be honest: being knocked out is a relief sometimes.
