The Sunbird by Elizabeth Wein
Dec. 5th, 2007 06:25 amThree books in the past week about child abuse/neglect:
Elizabeth Wein's The Sunbird, the third book in her series beginning with The Winter Prince, a meditation on Mordred which asks the question, "What happens to Mordred when Arthur bears a legitimate son." This book (put back into print by
sdn's Firebird Books) is a must read for any Arthurian fan. Wein's sense of drama and use of familial relationship is phenomenal.
The Sunbird is about Medraut's (Mordred's) son by an Aksumite (Ethiopian) princess. Telemakos (after Odysseus' son) ends up having a gift for spying and becomes the Emporer's spy to try to figure out who is crossing the plague blockade and why. This ends up with him becoming captured and used for labor in the salt desert.
The book is pretty riveting, but the biggest payoff is at the end when Medraut (who's taken a vow of silence) finally speaks. Again, the drama of familial relationships is brought 'round full circle.
