New Zealand Rocks!!!
Feb. 7th, 2008 09:12 pmSo, I finally saw the first few episodes of Flight of the Conchords. I don't know what to say, it's amusing, but in that dry, buddy-humor, establishing in-joke kind of way. Luckily, the concepts are so simple it doesn't take long to do. There's something about it that reminded me of Peep Show.
My favorite line of the evening (along with the comment about how one of the characters talks like a robot, "Yeah, that's a New Zealander accent," one fo the other characters says) is a comment someone makes about a song a ship metaphor:
"Women love that sentimental nautical shit. Haven't you ever seen Watership Down?"
And that's kind of how the humor works. Plus, about a zillion references to 1980s music videos. This is clearly a GenX show, because I'm not sure anyone younger (Cheezy G, for example) would get the references. (I'm not even sure I'm getting all the references.)
One of my favorite episodes features their 'rap' identities. Bret is 'Rhymenocerous' and Jemaine is 'Hiphopapotamus.' Plus, the Bowie episode was kind of awesome... unfortunately, if I were to impersonate a music star it would probably be Prince, and I can't do a body double for his physique.
AND... some of the cute girls on the show are actually geeky, for a change.
The actress playing Mel, their only fan, is someone I went to high school with; which is kind of surreal.
And New York actually looks like New York in their show.
But a bunch of episodes in a row is kind of wearing. It's funnier if you just watch one or two at a time.
