A cranky Sunday ended on a good note with Mildred Pierce for movie night. For the most part people liked it, which is a relief, because it was my pick. I'd suggested it on a whim because this evening is Mother's Day and was the second thing I thought of after Mommy Dearest.
Mildred Pierce is a melodrama starring Joan Crawford as a long-suffering mother of an ungrateful, spoiled, daughter. After her husband leaves her she raises her family on her own, building a successful business empire with her skilz in the kitchen. It's an interesting film for a lot of reasons, but one notable thing about the movie is Mildred's success as an business woman. It comes with a lot of baggage including an ungrateful family, men who are just after her money, etc. It's over the top and I recommend it if your in the mood for melodrama.
But the highlight of the evening (besides
kung_fu_monkey's reactions to the film) was seeing everyone and eating
saintpookie's fabulous handmade gyoza (he kept insisting they were easy, I don't believe him because I can't imagine doing it) and Mel's amazing rhubarb cake. Mmmm, food.
I've had a lot on my mind and have also had some weird things happen over the past few days, but I think I'd like to end/start the week on a positive note.
